The Serra Club is a group of individuals committed to fostering and promoting vocations to the priesthood and religous life in the Corpus Christi area. Is is affiliated with the USA Council of Serra International.
Serra International is formally recognized by the Holy See as the global lay apostolate for vocations.
The Serra Club of Corpus Christi is dedicated to the mission outlined in the objectives of Serra International:
1) To foster and promote vocations to the ministerial priesthood in the Catholic Church as a particular vocation to service and to support priests in their sacred ministry.
2) To encourage and affirm vocations to consecrated religious life in the Catholic Church.
3) To assist its members to recognize and respond in their own lives to God's call to holiness in Jesus Christ and through the Holy Spirit.
Serra began in 1935 in Seattle, Washington, by four Catholic friends who met regularly to discuss how their Christian values could be lived out in their lives. As more people joined them, they focused on encouraging vocations to the priesthood and the consecrated religious life.
They chose Padre Junipero Serra, a Spanish Franciscan missionary, as their patron and selected his name for their group. Saint Junipero Serra widely known as the Apostle of California, founded nine missions and converted thousands to our Catholic faith.
The motto of Saint Junipero Serra, "Always go forward, never turn back" is the governing spirit for all Serrans serving in the Serra lay apostolate for vocations in the Catholic Church. Embodied in that simple phrase is the exhortation of Jesus in the gospel of
Luke 9:62,
"No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks
back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."
The motivation of Serrans is the love of God, love of the Eucharist and the sacraments, love of the priesthood and the Church (the people of God). Serrans draw strength from the Eucharist and devotion to the Blessed Mother, especially through praying her Holy Rosary. Serrans also strive to serve with love, generosity and humility and remain obedient at all times to the local Ordinary, or Bishop.
"The fostering of Vocations cannot be considered a marginal activity, [it]
must be incorporated fully into the Life and Activity of the community."- Saint John Paul II
